...80.000 people in the European Union die every year because of passive smoke. Because of a small amount of passive smoke the risk for coronary heart disease is 30% higher (study by WHO).
Most people, also medical students and doctors don't know that it is dangerous like that! And for sure the bigger part of general public is not aware that people are dying because they smoke in their flat with closed windows - or that people are dying because of passive smoke in discotheques!
so what can we do together as IFMSA?
The idea is that ifmsa-members in different towns and different countries organise students-parties where smoking is not allowed. It should be a sign to the public and politicians in those countries where it is legal to smoke inside a discotheke. A sign that it is possible to have a indoor-party that is not filled with smoke at all! Where it is possible to breath deeply, where the clothes don't stink to high heaven at the morning after and where the people are not exposured to tobacco smoke all night long!!!
how to make a party!
Find a discotheke, create a poster and give out some flyers - that's it! :-) And you will earn money, by the way...
1. find a discotheke: look for a discotheke you like, especially one that is not filled at a Thursday (31st of May, 2007), because... the guests should come -because- it's smoke-free, not because they go there anyway! and because the owner of a discotheque that is not always filled will be happy if you organise a party to raise his profite! so the owner will pay money to YOU!
2. create a poster: a good poster is... not good looking - but you look at it! flashy colours, human faces and sexy - that's a good poster! and just a little bit of information: what, when, where! hang them up at all parts of your university, students hostels, just everywhere where the people are who can maybe come to your party!
3. hand out flyers: maybe as a 'small poster', one person can hand out 500-1.000 flyers in just one hour, so order enough of them, the members of your local committee will help you for sure!
To print the posters and flyers ask some print shops for a good price or look into the internet, sometimes it's much, much cheaper!
4. special promotion:
- if you have the oportunity to send one email to a high number of students make it! maybe somebody has a friend of another faculty who can make the same for you at his faculty!
- promote it in regional newspapers, they can put their logo at your posters and flyers...
- promote it in regional radio or television, they can put their logo at your posters and flyers...
5. earn money: nobody believes that THEY pay YOU money - but the owner of your discotheque will, because you can bring the guests and his profite will raise!
